The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – May 4, 2010

Manny Pacquiao is growing more open-minded about accepting additional blood testing as a stipulation for an agreement with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Pacquiao is quoted on his website stating, “I am willing to help the sport for the future of the sport. I do not want to see anyone cheat or cheat this sport. For that reason I am willing to consider taking blood [tests] as close as 14 days prior to the fight, as long as my opponent does the same, and it is not a lot of blood, just enough to test.” So Manny will bend, but only because it is for the good of the sport? LOL. Please. Manny decided blood testing wasn’t an issue the moment Mosley’s crashing right hand buckled Mayweather’s legs and made him look like an Elvis Presley impersonator . . .

I chuckled when I read the Boston Herald report about tension in the Red Sox locker room. According to the Herald more than a few Red Sox veterans are upset with what they perceive is a laissez-faire attitude toward losing

Reception

Most critical reviews of MonsterQuest pertain to the season one DVD set which was released as a 4 DVD boxed collection on May 27, 2008.

Rich Rosell of Digitally Obsessed gave it a “B-,” stating, “The good news is that this isn’t a trashy reality show, eager to make everything overblown and sinister. Instead, it takes a seemingly well-researched approach, leaving viewers the opportunity to make up their own minds.” He also believed that the “content is certainly nerd-worthy in an I-want-to-believe/Mulder kind of way”.

Cinematic Happenings Under Development (CHUD) gave the show a 5.9/10 review, saying that the show is “basically a rehashing of the 1970s/1980s TV show, In Search Of…” and “it leaves you with a sense of either ‘been there, done that’ or just a feeling of incompleteness because it basically raises as many questions as it tries to answer.”

Diablo Cody gave the show high praise in the October 24, 2008 issue of the magazine

What Economic Recovery? What Economic Recession?

What Economic Recovery? What Economic Recession?

In early November the talking heads were breathlessly reporting the economy “grew” by 3.5% in the third quarter…that the economy was now recovering.  The end of economic contraction also signaled the end of the recession that began in the fourth quarter of 2007.  And they attributed much of this growth to the pick up in auto sales. To read the full government report, go to www.bea.gov.

The index of leading economic indicators, which has been positive for seven months now, is also suggesting the economy is in recovery.

So, is it true? Are we on a sustainable growth path now? Does this latest government release about the economy mean the worst is behind us? Does the Index of Leading Economic Indicators tell us the same thing?

Well, let’s look at the reports and see where the growth came from. Maybe that will give us some answers.

To start, the 3rd quarter’s growth rate has since been revised downward to 2.8%. And the following

Rb Bell Hopes to Find Success in Houston – Dallas Morning News

Mike Bell had a successful rookie season at tailback for the Denver Broncos. Then he was moved to fullback and things went downhill from there until he was eventually released last week.

Now Bell has been signed by the Texans and he’s hoping the return to tailback will help him stay on in Houston.

“I came in here with a good attitude just like I did coming in as a rookie in Denver,” he said. “Just grind from the bottom and I think I have a good chance because I know the offense just coming from Denver. So I think I have a good chance to come out there and compete.”

Making the final cut probably will be difficult for Bell. He was signed to fill in at practice for Chris Brown, who has missed the last few days with back problems. Houston also has Ahman Green, Darius Walker and rookie Steve Slaton.

However his familiarity with the offense of coach Gary Kubiak, a longtime former Denver offensive coordinator,

Delivering in the Clutch in the Major Leagues

Delivering in the Clutch in the Major Leagues

They exist in every sport-players who can deliver when it counts the most and when the pressure is on. After a while the feats of such players take on a life of their own-a mythology starts to surround them. In baseball, their final inning home runs soar out of stadiums like guided missiles, their fielding plays start to include jumps and stretches that would rate “10′s” from Olympic diving judges, and their willingness to take one for the team makes you think they deserve the Congressional Medal of Honor. So who are those few ball players who rise to the occasion when that occasion demands something big, stunning, and final?

Part fact and part fiction, clutch players aren’t judged so much by how many game-winning plays they make but by the circumstances under which they make them. Reggie Jackson built a career on heroics that annually occurred during the tenth month of the year, earning him the appellation “Mr. October.”

City Break to Toronto

City Break to Toronto

Experiencing Toronto city breaks is more than just about climbing the CN Tower, watching a Blue Jays baseball game in the Rogers Centre, catching a Toronto Maple Leafs or Toronto Raptors game at the Air Canada Centre, visiting Canada’s Hockey Hall of Fame or making the trek to Niagara Falls. The best part of Toronto is its eclectic mix of cultures, peoples, foods, shops, music, events and festivals. Toronto is one of the safest cities in North America when it comes to crime rates. Much of this has to do with the city’s stringent policies regarding gun laws but, regardless, the low incidence of crime is even more remarkable when one considers how diverse the population of Toronto is. No one nationality is dominant in Toronto, though people of European descent (British, Irish, and the like) make up just over half of the population. Nearly a quarter of Toronto is made up of Chinese and South Asian people, and the fact of the matter is that Toronto is incredibly diverse

Jazz: an Art of Expression in the Form of Music

I made this presentation for one of my college classes as a persuasive video of who is, in my humble opinion, the greatest player in St. Louis Blues history. As part of this project, I need some feedback! Please comment on my video (preferably before April 12, 2010, when this project is due) and let me know who you think is the greatest player to ever wear the Blue Note, and give me a few reasons why! Please keep your comments clean, civil, and without vulgarity, or else your comments will be deleted. And my apologies for the audio, the original songs I put on this video will not play on YouTube because of copyright laws, so I found the song “Higher” by Creed to use on YouTube’s song library. It’s not as good as the other songs, but it will have to do. Thanks for your help! GO BLUES!!!!

Jazz: an Art of Expression in the Form of Music

Many people think that jazz is the music of the elite and well-established people. But, if you look into the roots of jazz, you will see the opposite. Jazz is an art of expression in the form of music. Jazz music is the fundamental music in human life.

Jazz tradition evolved from the lifestyle of black community in America who has been oppressed. Initially, the tradition began from the influence of tribal drums and gospel music, blues and field hollers (the shouts of cultivators). Its birth process has demonstrated that jazz was closely related to the life defense and expression of human life.

The interesting thing from jazz music was that the origin of the word “jazz” was derived from a vulgar term used for sexual acts. Most of rhythms in jazz were ever associated with the brothels and the women with an unfortunate reputation.

Then, in the journey of jazz, it eventually became an art form of jazz music, both in the specific

New Rochelle

New Rochelle, or Nouvelle-Rochelle in French, is a city in the Westchester county of the NY State. The French origin of its name may be attributed to the Huguenots, or French Protestants, who fled from the Catholics in their home country and came to the town as refugees. A majority of the new inhabitants were craftsmen from the French city of La Rochelle. It seemed only appropriate for them to give the town the name New Rochelle.

Like most cities, New Rochelle, New York was transformed into a city in the advent of railroads in the late 1800s. Soon after that, New Rochelle, NY became known as a summer resort. With this development, the city was among the first “bedroom communities” in the United States. This simply implies that the residents of New Rochelle, New York actually lived their lives or worked outside the city, and they only come home to New Rochelle to sleep. Hence, the New Rochelle lifestyle is an epitome of American ideal.

All of It?s Good

All of It?s Good

The ancient wisdom of Kabbalah states, “The Creator’s desire is to do good to his Creatures.”  What does this really mean?  According to this statement, everything we experience should feel good.  At least that is how this statement could be interpreted.  Or, perhaps, that is simply the Creator’s desire and He or She is not able to deliver the goods?  That seems highly unlikely.

Well, then how exactly can we analyze this statement for it to make sense?   The Creator’s desire is to do good to His creatures.  To begin to analyze this statement we need to look at how we analyze what “good” is.  Good is a very fickle thing.  For example, if someone lives in St. Louis, Missouri and is a baseball fan, that person would really want the St. Louis Cardinals to win the game.  That would really be good.  On the other hand, if the Cardinals were playing the Chicago Cubs, and you were a Cubs fan, the Cardinals’ win would be bad.  So, is
